Wedding dream comes true By Bridget Rutherford ASHLEY VAN de Loo cancelled her big wedding to fiance Zane Thoms when her brother was diagnosed with a rare disease. But her North New Brighton community wasn’t having a bar of it. The couple got engaged in August, and started planning
their big day. But four weeks later, Miss Van de Loo’s 18-year-old brother, Mitchell Pasco, was diagnosed with Takayasu arteritis, which causes chronic inflammation of large blood vessels and arteries. His condition means he could have a heart attack at any time, and has to have chemotherapy, medical

By Sarla Donovan VANDALS HAVE damaged a new $20,000 plastic roof at the Bromley School swimming pool. They cut a hole big enough for a person to climb through last Saturday. Contractor Darren King had recently finished putting on the new roof. “It’s never going to look nice for another eight years (when it will be replaced),“ Mr King said. “It’s like cutting a hole in a tent – you can patch it but it will never look the same.” The roof is made from greenhouse plastic and shade-cloth and measures 16m x 30m. “We’d have to strip it all back and replace the lot,” Mr King said. Principal Scot Kinley said it was “very disappointing” for the pupils. As well as the damaged roof, the vandals attacked the pool enclosure. They broke the toilet cisterns, poured liquid soap from the dispensers into the pool and threw in chairs and other items. •Turn to page 6

News Clearing starts on section But owner won’t say when it will be finished By Bridget Rutherford THE OWNER of an overgrown property in Avondale is refusing to say when the site will be completely cleared. Last week, Pegasus Post reported Maree Ross had tried for 18 months to get some action on the overgrown mess on the property next door to her Woolley St home. She said it was a fire risk, attracted vermin and insects, and looked awful. On Wednesday and Thursday, the property’s owner removed a small amount of the vegetation with a weed whacker and chainsaw. But work ceased on Friday. Owner Michael Hindmarsh would not talk to Pegasus Post about when they would finish clearing the site. “No comment,” he said yesterday. Ms Ross said although she was

thrilled work had started, she wanted to see more done before Christmas. She said a lot of vegetation had been cut down and was now sitting on the ground, which could create a fire risk when it dried out. “If anything, it’s going to be worse than ever,” she said. “I’ve got Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve with a fire risk and a park behind me. I’m very worried.”
It had also heightened her hayfever, she said. She planned on calling Mr Hindmarsh today to ask more be cleared before Christmas. Originally, the city council said the maintenance of private properties was not its responsibility unless there was a fire risk or it encroached onto footpaths. It said there was no fire risk because the vegetation was still green.

But after questions from the Pegasus Post, the city council later contacted the owners to ask the site be cleared, starting last week. “I just thank you guys [Pegasus Post] on what’s been actioned. Because the council sure as heck wasn’t,” Ms Ross said. City council head of regulatory compliance Tracey Weston said the site would be revisited early in the new year and, if it had not been cleared, it would be reassessed as to whether it was a fire risk. The property is next to Woolley St Kidsfirst kindergarten which was also concerned about the fire risk. The owners bought the property after the February 22,, 2011, earthquake, Ms Ross said.

In Brief PLAYGROUND OPENING The opening of the New Brighton beachside playground will take place tomorrow. Development Christchurch will host the event from 10.30-11.30am, which will see the $8 million play area and paddling pool on Marine Pde opened to the public. The playground includes a splash water area and the famous New Brighton whale pool, as well as a waka, sandpit and a play area for children with disabilities. PARK FITNESS TRAIL Burwood Park’s fitness trail equipment has been ordered but due to the number of pieces, the type of equipment and the upcoming holidays, the order will not be delivered until midFebruary. The city council’s work schedule means a late February or early March installation date is likely. It will take about four weeks to complete the installation. Mural brings Mairehau alive Community steps Pupils inspire up to give couple Innes Rd art dream wedding
By Julia Evans A DRAB wall in Mairehau has come to life with colourful artwork – an idea sparked entirely by local children. When asked what was wrong with their community, Mairehau Primary School pupils said the area needed more colour. So Richard ‘Popx’ Baker was enlisted to paint a mural on a wall between the school and Innes Rd. The Neighbourhood Trust and Child and Youth Friendly Cities organised the artwork, which features Mairehau pupils planting a garden. Trust manager Ginny Larsen said it has been a great result from a collaborative effort. “The project started two-anda-half years ago when the trust was working with children from Mairehau Primary asking them what they liked about the area, what they didn’t like and what they would like to change,” she said. One of the main themes was that the pupils found Mairehau a “bit grey” and wanted “more

colour and vibrancy” in the area. The pupils took photos and made up a board of ideas. “One of the things they suggested was a mural,” Ms Larsen said. But the trust quickly hit a road block. Said Ms Larsen: “We thought this would be lovely but we’ve got no money.”
That’s when Child and Youth Friendly Cities came on board. Ms Larsen said the group really liked the fact that it was the voices and ideas of local children being heard. Many large-scale murals by Baker feature across the city. They include a building at Phillipstown School through to the “wall of love” in New Brighton.

had that before.” Miss Van de Loo said Millie was disappointed her parents may not have had the big wedding they hoped for. “She was quite sad, even I was sad, but that was what was important to us at the time.” Now they do not have to worry about organising the wedding, they can spend more time supporting Mitchell. “It could well have been his last Christmas. He could have a heart attack at any time,” Miss Van de Loo said. Millie would be her maid of honour, while Luke would be Mr Thoms’ best man. Mitchell is one of four New Zealanders to have Takayasu arteritis, which most commonly affects Asians and women. It has damaged his heart so much so that it is only working at 28 per cent, Miss Van de Loo said. The future Mr and Mrs Thoms are already thinking about paying it forward, with a surprise planned after they tie the knot for those who had offered help.

Pupils first to ride new cycleway LINWOOD AVENUE School pupils pedalled their way into the history books last week when they became the first to ride on the Rapanui-Shag Rock cycleway. The first stage of the cycleway was officially opened on Wednesday morning. It takes cyclists from Linwood Park, through Linwood, into the city centre – a journey of about 2.5km. Eventually the cycleway will stretch as far east as the Ferrymead Bridge, where it will link to the Christchurch Coastal Pathway. For Linwood Avenue School pupils, the opening provided a chance to not only try out the new cycleway, but also a new bicycle. Some of the bicyles the school used for cycle safety training were stolen earlier this year so a few city council staff donated their old bikes to ICEcycles to repair. ICEcycles have already repaired and gifted one to a student for Christmas. The remaining bikes will be distributed to the school early in the new year. “It’s fantastic to see the kids on their bikes and enjoying the new cycleway,’’ said Innes Ward city councillor Pauline Cotter,

The city council is building 13 major cycleway routes across Christchurch. Three routes – the Papanui Parallel, the Little River Link and the Uni-Cycle – have been completed or substantially completed. The remaining 10 are in various stages of planning and implementation. In late October and early November, the city council surveyed 625 cyclists who were using the completed routes to gauge their thoughts on the cycleways. Ninety-four per cent of people who answered the survey said they thought the new physically separated cycleways had improved their safety and cycling comfort. Eighty-three per cent stated the new separated cycleways had played a role in encouraging them to make more trips by cycle. Ninety-two per cent of people surveyed said they either strongly agreed or agreed that physically separated cycleways should be installed on routes throughout Christchurch.

QE II Park attraction slides into place EXPERIENCE thrilling twists and turns down and an enclosed flume or climb the walls at up to 90deg angles when the QE II centre hydroslide opens next year. One of the biggest attractions at QE II Park is already sliding into place, with the new water feature set to create a massive splash. The bright blue hydroslide landmark on the north-west corner of the $38.6 million QE II Sport and Recreation Centre is being installed to signal the pool site via Travis Rd. City council operations manager, western area recreation, Nigel Cox, said the flumes have been bolted into place as the pool area takes shape. “The 130m-long WhiteWater AquaSphere raft slide is expected to be fully installed by Christmas and operational when the new QE II centre opens in the middle of next year,” Mr Cox said. The original earthquakedamaged QE II centre, which was built to host the 1974 Commonwealth Games, was demolished in 2012.

A MARSHLAND park will be transformed into a winter wonderland where a misbehaving yeti has trapped Santa’s reindeer in an ice world. The city council is sponsoring a Magical Park app experience at Ouruhia Reserve on Chenery Ave off Marshland Rd. Children will help free the reindeer captured by a yeti in a snowy ice world and show them the way to Santa’s sleigh, as well as retrieve presents that have been thrown around by a bad elf.

The game, which uses a mobile device and the Magical Park app, allows children to experience the park through
blended virtual worlds seen through the app. The game will be live from Friday and will run until December 31. City council head of parks Brent Smith said Magical Park used technology as a tool to get young people outside enjoying a local park.
“We’re sure that kids are going to have a lot of fun playing this one, especially with a Christmas theme this year. But they’ll also be able to get some exercise in the fresh air and enjoy the natural world around them.” The game is suitable for children aged six to 11, has three levels, and will take 30-60min to play. The app runs on iPhone and iPads and Android devices with compass, gyroscope, GPS and accelerometer sensors. You will need access to mobile data or a hotspot to play.

McLachlan swims to medals South Brighton athlete eyes up world stage

By Andrew King SOUTH NEW Brighton’s Samantha McLachlan took out four medals in the pool at the Special Olympics New Zealand national summer games in Wellington. The 21-year-old won gold in the 25m butterfly, silver in the 25m and 50m freestyle and bronze in the 4x25m medley relay. Her mother, Hayley, said she has loved swimming since she first got in the pool as an eightyear-old. “She took the event very seriously and trained about four times a week in preparation for it with others at the Graham Condon pool,” she said. Samantha wants to head to a world games event at some stage. “That is her goal,” she said. She is also learning to become a swim coach through her trainer, Brid Collins. Fire columnist bids farewell By Mark Thomas – fire risk management officer THIS IS the last flame files. After nearly 11 years back in Christchurch and 518 columns completed, I’ve decided it’s time to shuffle off into retirement. The column has been something I’ve always enjoyed. Sometimes the time available has been too short for comfort and some other times I’ve had a good subject and time to do it justice. I can only hope it’s been entertaining to some and even occasionally informative. I know the issues haven’t really changed. There are still too many kitchen fires. There are still too many arson fires. But in recent years, the number of fire fatalities has fallen. This must in part be the result of our promotion of smoke alarms and I still live
in hope of the day none of us will agree to sleep anywhere that is not alarm covered. Another quite satisfying part of this job has been the public speaking. I’ve talked to older people, young people, service groups and even prisoners in jail. Some of the most satisfying feedback I ever got was being told all of the group I had spoken to at Christchurch Women’s Prison later used their phone privileges to ring home to ensure the family was protected by smoke alarms. Finally, sincere thanks are due to Star Media for providing me with the platform to preach the fire safety message. That’s a true public service and is very much appreciated. I’ve been fortunate with the calibre of people I’ve worked with, both in the firefighting family and those outside. Stay safe everyone!

S E R O T S Y L I M FA N I E T A M A G L A AM PAPANUI Two of the Salvation Army Family Stores in the north of the city have amalgamated into one new location in Restell Street Papanui. The Main North Road shop has closed, and the Cranford St shop, which was opened after the earthquakes to provide furniture and linen for displaced families, has also closed its doors. “The Cranford St shop had come to the end of its season, and the opportunity arose to bring the two shops together, which has been very exciting for us,” says Pastor for Salvation Army Christchurch North, Gill Waugh. “The new premises in Restell St offer a large, bright open space with lots of room for stock. New stock is on the shop floor every day, so it pays to drop in regularly.” The huge selection includes clothing, the popular label racks for that something special, toys, books, crockery and glassware, electrical items and furniture, all donated by the public. “There’s off-street parking at the new shop, which makes it easier for people dropping off items, and also for our customers,” Gill says. The Family Store will also pick up donated goods and deliver as arranged, Monday to Friday. All the proceeds from sales go towards the Salvation Army’s community work, such as budgeting advice, advocacy, WINZ quotes, welfare support and the Positive Lifestyle Programme. (These services operate from the Belfast Centre, 794 Main North Rd.) The Family Store offers a Loyalty Card system, with customers getting their card clicked for every $10 spent. Once they have 10 clicks, they get $10 to spend in the store. New manager at the Papanui Family Store, Anne Tihore, previously worked as a Family Store volunteer. She has four employees on her team, who are assisted by 25-30 volunteers. Some ladies have volunteered for up to 20 and 30 years. Anne and staff member Pauline say
customer feedback on the new shop has been really positive. “They love the spaciousness, brightness and the layout, and that everything is all in one place, not in two shops,” Pauline says. Anne says the new Family Store has also brought a consolidation amongst the staff. “There’s a great team spirit. And the shop also has a community feel about it, which comes from the customers. Papanui is a very strong community and we are excited to be a part of it.” The Papanui Family Store is currently recruiting for volunteers. PINEAPPLE, GINGER AND COCONUT CRUMBLE Ingredients Filling 1 pineapple 2 Tbsp butter 1 tsp vanilla essence 2 pieces star anise 4 pieces crystallised ginger, finely chopped 3/4 cup coconut milk Coconut crumble
100g butter 160g flour ½ tsp ground ginger 50g sugar 80g shredded coconut 1 lime, zested Directions Heat oven to 180 deg C. Peel pineapple, cut into quarters, remove core then slice into small even pieces. Melt butter in a large frying pan, add pineapple, vanilla and star anise.
Cook on a high heat until pineapple begins to caramelise. Add ginger and coconut milk, allow to simmer gently for 10min. Dice butter then rub in flour and ginger using fingertips until it resembles breadcrumbs. Stir through sugar, coconut and lime zest. Spoon pineapple into a baking dish, sprinkle over coconut crumble mix and bake for 20-30min until crumble topping is golden and fragrant.

2 cups of grated carrots (from about three carrots) 1 cup of grated fresh beets (from about one medium sized peeled beet) 1/2 cup golden raisins 1/2 teaspoon paprika (sweet, not hot) 1/4 teaspoon ground cumin 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon Small pinch of salt Small pinch of cayenne 2 Tbsp lemon juice 2 teaspoons honey 2 Tbsp sliced fresh mint leaves
Directions Place the grated carrots in a medium sized serving bowl. Place the grated beets into a sieve and briefly rinse with cold water. This will rinse away a little of the excess beet juice that may otherwise colour the whole salad beet red. Pat dry with a paper towel. Then add to the bowl with the carrots. Add the raisins. Stir to gently combine. In a small bowl, whisk together the paprika, cumin, cinnamon, salt, and cayenne. Then add the lemon juice and honey and whisk until smooth. Drizzle over the carrots and beets, then gently fold until the carrots and beets are lightly coated. Let sit for an hour before serving, either chilled or at room temperature, for the dressing to seep into the carrots and beets. Right before serving, stir in a couple tablespoons of sliced fresh mint leaves. Garnish with fresh mint.

By Emily O’Connell THE Brethren of Lodge Takahe No. 397, The Freemasons Charity and City Harvest are joining forces to help the hungry at Christmas. Together they are providing a Christmas meal to the homes of 50 families across the city. Organiser Joshua Jackson said the idea is to provide families with quality food items to cook a Christmas meal in their own homes. Some of the food was collected from South City New World last week, with other items from the City Harvest food bank. A team packed and distributed half of the dinners to the chosen families’ homes. This week they will collate the remaining packs for delivery. The packages included a frozen chicken, stuffing, gravy, Christmas pudding, Lindt chocolates and fudge. Mr Jackson said the initiative is slightly different because they are giving families luxury items for a Christmas dinner instead
of “just a normal food parcel”. He hopes the Christmas dinners will relieve stress and spread Christmas joy. “It’s my belief that this drive will serve as a pilot to test the feasibility of potentially running a much larger scale project in subsequent years,” Mr Jackson said.
Marian College students entertain rest home residents EVERY YEAR Marian College runs an inquiry-based project with the junior school. In the final weeks of the term, all year 9-10 students were involved in the end-of-year collaborative unit, exploring the theme of beauty. The teachers got together with their students to develop a programme – on an aspect of beauty which interested them – with the end result being a presentation or performance to the whole junior school. House group, Takahe 3, explored “beauty in giving” and “beauty in older generations”. There were nine students and two teachers – Sarah Southen and Yvonne Teague – in the group. The project involved coming

up with a plan and carrying it out. The students made cards and boxes for residents at the nearby St Helenas rest home, baked cup cakes in their own time and bought items to give
away. They also planned a special Christmas trip to the home together. St Helenas was chosen as it was close to the school in Barbadoes St and the residents warmly
